Solving water pollution problems will promote job creation -UNESCO

The United Nations Education, Science and Culture Organisation (UNESCO) says efforts of governments in solving water pollution problems is capable of promoting environmental friendly jobs in the society.

Mr Simone Grego, Science Adviser, UNESCO-West Africa, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Saturday.

There is strong connection between adequate management of water resources and job creation and at least three out of every four jobs has to do with water, hence the need for its sanitary.

If you tackle water pollutions, you’ll create decent jobs and specialised jobs, you’ll create green jobs through restoration of the environment.

If water resources are not managed properly, it can have a negative effect on your GDP as a nation because of its contact with the society at large.

On the other hand, If you manage your water resources well, it can add up to your GDP as a nation,” he said.Grego also commended the Federal Government for the opening of Oil Spillage clean-up in Ogoni Land, Rivers State, saying, “it’s a right initiative’’.

He said that effort was ongoing by the organisation to give a report on emerging water pollutions in Nigeria and how they could be contained.
NAN reports that UNESCO-Nigeria, on Thursday presented the United Nations World Water Development Report 2016 to the Federal Government at the 23rd Regular Meeting of the National Council on Water Resources in Abuja.

The recent world bank report says proper management of Nigeria’s water resources can increase its GDP by two per cent, while improper management of same resources can decrease it by 14 per cent.
