Sowore, ADC demand independent probe of Habila’s death

Human rights activist and former Presidential Candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has called for a coroner’s inquest into the death of Mary Habila, who reportedly died at the residence of the Minister of Works, David Umahi.

Sowore, in a statement shared on his verified X handle, insisted that the circumstances surrounding Habila’s death remain unclear and require thorough investigation.

He said: “Given the mysterious manner of her death and unanswered questions about the circumstances of her presence at the Minister’s home, it is in the interest of justice that all appropriate investigative and forensic procedures, including, where required by law, an autopsy and any other relevant inquiries, be completed before Habila is buried. “

He further warned against any attempt to hasten her burial, urging authorities to ensure due process is followed. Sowore noted that reports indicated that Habila died with blood flowing from her mouth, a condition, he said, that suggests the death was unnatural.

“There have been several allegations of mysterious deaths surrounding Umahi, including those of five NELAN Engineers that remain unsolved to date,” he said.

Also, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has asked the minister to step aside pending an independent investigation into the death of Habila.

The demand was made yesterday in a statement by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi. The party said the circumstances surrounding Habila’s death had raised public concerns that required an independent investigation, insisting that only a transparent process would establish the facts and restore public confidence.

The party also demanded a full autopsy and the public release of the investigation findings, arguing that the investigation should be conducted outside the influence of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Federal Government.
