Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore will appear in Abuja today before the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) on an allegation of obstruction. In the letter titled “Investigation Activities: Invitation Letter,” the Nigeria Police, through Commissioner of Police, Operations, CP Ibitoye Rufus Alajide, said it was investigating cases of resisting and obstructing public officers, disobedience to lawful order, acts intended to cause grievous harm or prevent arrest, compelling action by intimidation, reckless and negligent acts, refusal to assist a public servant, and cyberstalking.

On January 9, Sowore challenged police officers attached to the Makinde Police Station who were stopping motorists at the 7&8 Bus Stop on Murtala Mohammed Airport Road, Lagos.

“It has been observed that the police officers have been causing traffic congestion on the route while stopping vehicles for stop and search,” he said.
The police requested that he report for an interview with the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Force Intelligence Department (FID), at SPO’s Room 212, 2nd Floor, Force Intelligence Department (FID) Complex, Shehu Shagari Way, opposite Force Headquarters Area 11, Garki, Abuja, today, at approximately 10:00 a.m.

The police added that this request was made pursuant to the investigative powers conferred on the Force by the combined effect of Sections 214 and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) and Section 4 of the Police Act and Regulations, 2020.

According to the police, Sowore is at liberty to visit along with his attorney.
Sowore, who responded to the letter, said he was ready to honour the invitation.
