The South-South/South-West Alliance, on Monday, urged the 2023 presidential candidates of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, to distance themselves from the “deceptive politics” of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai.

The Alliance said that Mr. Obi must recognise the potential damage that an association with El-Rufai could inflict on his reputation and political aspirations.
In a statement signed by Chairperson Ifeoma Efe and Secretary General Ayodele Toluwa, the Alliance warned that El-Rufai has built a reputation for employing misinformation and manipulation, posing a risk to both Obi’s and Atiku’s political credibility.

They called on all political actors to uphold truthfulness and responsible leadership, warning that any affiliation with those who thrive on deception could erode public trust and weaken the nation’s democratic foundations.

They said: “El-Rufai’s political career has been marred by a series of deceitful tactics and misleading narratives that seek to undermine the democratic process and manipulate public sentiment.

“As a leader committed to transparency and accountability, Mr. Obi must not allow himself to be dragged into this quagmire of deceit. The people of Nigeria deserve honest leadership, and any association with figures who thrive on misinformation will only serve to tarnish his image and the ideals he represents.

“Furthermore, we call upon Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), to unequivocally dissociate himself from El-Rufai’s antics. Political leaders must rise above the fray of petty politics and focus on the greater good of the nation. By distancing himself from El-Rufai, Atiku will demonstrate a commitment to integrity and the values that the Nigerian populace yearns for in its leaders.

“We commend notable figures such as Muhammadu Buhari, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and Sule Lamido for their courage in openly calling out El-Rufai’s lies and manipulative strategies. Their willingness to stand against the tide of deceit sends a powerful message that integrity must prevail in our political discourse.

“It is crucial for leaders to set a standard of accountability and truthfulness, especially in an era where misinformation can easily sway public opinion and disrupt the democratic process.

“The South-South/South-West Alliance firmly believes that no responsible political entity or individual should support El-Rufai’s tactics. His approach not only undermines the principles of democracy but also perpetuates a culture of distrust among the electorate. We urge all political actors to reject such behaviour and instead focus on constructive dialogue and collaboration that will foster unity and progress for our nation.”

They call on Peter Obi to uphold his values and not allow Nasir El-Rufai to stain his reputation with deceitful politics.
They also urge Atiku Abubakar to take a stand against El-Rufai’s antics and align himself with the principles of integrity that our nation desperately needs, adding, “Together, let us champion a political environment rooted in truth, accountability, and respect for the electorate.”
