In Abia State, the ongoing nationwide warning strike declared by the NLC witnessed 100 per cent compliance. The state NLC Chairman, Comrade Uchenna Obigwe and his Trade Union Congress (TUC) counterpart Comrade Sunny Onwuma dropped the hint yesterday.

They told journalists in Umuahia after the state Labour leadership rose from their strike review meeting saying that they are satisfied with the level of compliance in the state.

Indicating that Labour will sustain the ongoing indefinite warning strike to press home their demand for upward review of the current minimum wage, Comrade Obigwe said, “what we are doing now is to go out on monitoring in order to sustain compliance. All the affiliate unions of both NLC and TUC are on their feet to ensure that the total compliance already achieved is sustained.”

He asserted that the organised labour in Abia “will not sell out” and saying that the demand for new minimum wage is a nagging issue that affects everybody, including traders who also stand to benefit from an enhanced workers’ minimum wage.“If workers are paid well, traders will benefit as the volume of their sales would increase.”

In his remark, Comrade Onwuma of TUC said that the extant minimum wage expired in 2015 and subject to review every five years and lamented that government failed to initiate the process for its review.
