The Sultan of Sokoto and President General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has urged Moslems to devote themselves fully to Ibadat (worship) during the Ramadan.

Other religious and political leaders who spoke yesterday at the beginning of the Ramadan fast, also asked Moslems to pray fervently for Nigeria’s leaders to succeed in steering the affairs of state, as well as sustenance of peace and stability in the country and the world at large.

They also stressed the need for peaceful co-existence, love, forgiveness and compassion for Moslems and non-Moslems alike, irrespective of ethnic, religious and political beliefs.

In his goodwill message, former military president, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, enjoined Moslems to conduct themselves very well during the Ramadan to maximise the spiritual and physical benefits inherent in the fasting period.

He said in spite of the challenges we face at personal and national levels: “We are always strong and believing in divine intervention to always take us through the right path with prayers to find solutions to our challenges.

Speaking, Katsina State Governor, Aminu Bello Masari, urged Moslems to commit more to the nation’s cause and use religion for the country’s advancement.

Masari said this when he felicitated with Moslems on the commencement of Ramadan.

In the statement by his Media Aide, Abdu Labaran, Masari also called on Moslems to pray for the nation and its leadership.

On his part, Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, charged Nigerians to support Moslems across the country as they commence the holy month of Ramadan.

A statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Communication Strategy, Crusoe Osagie, quoted the governor as saying: “The holy month is a period of fasting and deep spiritual reflection and a period to deepen the love for one another.”

Meanwhile, Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, has called on Moslems to relate with fellow Moslems and non-Moslems with love and promote peaceful co-existence with their neighbours.

He made the call in his message to Moslems as they began the annual Ramadan fasting yesterday.

“I am most pleased to see the beginning of this year’s Ramadan. Ramadan is a period when Moslems worldwide engage in fasting – a physical and spiritual act of self-denial, cleansing, prayer, fellowship and charity,” he stated.

Also, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, called on Nigerians to use the Ramadhan period to extend love to one another and maintain unity and peace among themselves.

He said this in his Ramadhan message signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Musbau Rasak, and urged Nigerians not to relent in their prayers for the unity and peace of the country.
