Surulere Council to host inaugural ‘Lere Day’ celebration

Surulere Local Council is set to launch ‘Lere Day,’ a vibrant celebration of the community’s rich cultural heritage. The event, which will take place from December 10 to 15, 2024, aims to unite residents, families, and friends from all backgrounds.

The Chairman of the Planning Committee, Omotayo Gbajabiamila, announced the initiative at a recent flag-off ceremony, where the official logo for Lere Day was also unveiled.

Gbajabiamila highlighted the event’s focus on showcasing the talents of youth and emerging artists in music, dance, and comedy, providing them with a platform for exposure and mentorship from industry experts.

A diverse range of activities are planned, including talent hunts, trade fairs, football competitions, fashion shows, exhibitions, a carnival, and a community networking event called ‘Surulere Connect.’

The celebration will attract major musical acts such as Wizkid, Small Doctor, King SaheedOsupa, Malaika, Simi, Kizz Daniel, Mayorkun, and DJ Humility.
Surulere Council Chairman Sulaimon Bamidele Yusuf stressed the event’s significance, saying Surulere, with its rich history and modern amenities, deserves to be celebrated.

He drew parallels with other successful cultural celebrations like Ojude Oba Day, Calabar Carnival, the Durbar festival, and Notting Hill Carnival, expressing his hope that Lere Day will become a similarly enduring tradition.

Yusuf described Surulere’s evolution from a modest residential area to a bustling hub for commerce, entertainment, and sport, highlighting its central location within Lagos State. He also noted the area’s association with influential figures, including the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila.
