Taiwan plans sovereign wealth fund to boost global tech, AI expansion

Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te on Tuesday announced plans to create a sovereign wealth fund and investment platform aimed at scaling the country’s industrial capabilities globally, with a strong emphasis on technology and artificial intelligence (AI).

Speaking at the presidential palace to mark the first anniversary of his inauguration, Lai said the initiative would support Taiwan’s goal of remaining anchored at home while expanding its international economic footprint.

“We will promote an economic path of staying firmly rooted in Taiwan and expanding the global presence of our enterprises while strengthening ties with the U.S.,” Lai stated.

The announcement comes on the heels of growing U.S. investment in Taiwan’s tech sector. Lai cited the presence of companies such as Entegris, Micron, Google, AMD, and Nvidia as examples of Taiwan’s growing role in the global technology ecosystem.

Just a day earlier, Nvidia’s CEO, Jensen Huang, revealed plans to establish a new overseas headquarters—Nvidia Constellation—in Taipei.

President Lai also addressed international participants at Computex Taipei, a major tech trade event that opened on Tuesday and is hosting 50,000 visitors from abroad.

He underscored Taiwan’s collaboration with democratic partners like the United States to strengthen the semiconductor supply chain and push back against low-cost competition linked to China’s state-subsidised industries.

In 2024, Taiwan’s tech and semiconductor industries recorded export revenues surpassing $100 billion, reflecting a 59 per cent increase. More than 90 per cent of the world’s advanced wafer manufacturing is currently based in Taiwan.

Lai said the fund and investment platform would position Taiwan to lead in AI and tech innovation while reinforcing its role in the global economy.
