The Taraba State House of Assembly has approved the first reading of a bill seeking to establish the Taraba State University of Tropical Agriculture and Climate Change Action.

The proposed institution is aimed at promoting agricultural innovation and tackling climate change through specialized academic programmess.

The bill was sponsored by three lawmakers from the Sardauna local government council.

The members are the former speaker of the House, Abel Peter Diah, Nelson C. Len, and Abdulazeez S. Titong.

If allowed to see the light of day, the lawmakers said the bill would harness the region’s agricultural potential and foster sustainable development.

According to the sponsors, the university would provide educational and economic opportunities for residents, helping to build local expertise in tropical agriculture and environmental resilience.

They noted that the proposed site for the university was strategically selected for its fertile land, conducive climate, and suitability for agricultural research and innovation.

The development, at the time of filing this report, has generated excitement across the Sardauna council, where community leaders and residents have long advocated greater investment in education.

Speaking to The Guardian over the telephone, a resident described the university as “a vital investment in human capital and regional development.”
