Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Taraba State Chapter, has condemned the recent killing of innocent individuals within Yangtu Special Development Area of the state.
The incident, The Guardian gathered, occurred on Friday, as armed bandits targeted villages in Ussa and Takum local councils. The attacks, which at the time of filing this report, had continued to cause tension, led to the gruesome killing of no fewer than 11 farmers.
Expressing concern, CAN highlighted the shocking nature of the attacks, emphasising the stark contradiction with a recently signed peace agreement.
The association expressed dismay that despite the agreement, men and women were subjected to unprovoked attacks resulting in deaths.
Wondering why the attacks continued unabated, the association called for comprehensive investigation to identify the perpetrators and ensure they face the music.
Despite collaborative efforts from various stakeholders to restore lasting peace in Kuteb land of Southern Taraba, this incident underscored a disturbing persistence of violence.
It also urged the government to put up measures that would decisively end such atrocities. CAN, in the statement, appealed directly to the government and intelligence agencies to do everything within their power to apprehend those responsible for the barbaric act.
While calling for calm among the affected communities, CAN emphasised the importance of not taking the law into one’s own hands. Instead, the association encouraged residents to assist security agencies by providing relevant information that could lead to the swift apprehension of the perpetrators.
