• Says non-implementation of promotion for teachers suffocating

The leadership of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has berated Taraba State Governor, Darius Dickson Ishaku, over claim that his administration is not owing any group of workers in the state their monthly salaries.

Ishaku also claimed that his administration “will not be leaving behind any burden arising from unpaid emoluments for the incoming administration.”

However, the leadership of the state chapter of the NUT in a statement, yesterday, signed by its Chairman, Nathan Solomon and Secretary, Raphael Kunini, said: “In the light of the recent pronouncement by the state government on the state of salary payment and other entitlements to civil servants in the state, the NUT Taraba State Wing is constrained to highlight issues of concern affecting teaching workforce in the state for government attention and urgent action.

“The state government has not deemed it necessary to implement promotion for teachers.

“Promotion as when due is mandatory for every civil servant, but regrettably, non-implementation of 2006 promotion for teachers is suffocating.

“The issue of teachers’ promotion in the state over the years has not been in accordance with civil service rules but rather the discretion of the government. This has dampened the morale of Taraba teachers.

“Rather than claiming that the government is not owing workers, there is need for them (government) to make “redress” by computing all the affected teachers’ accumulated arrears for payment. they believed has become necessary.

“Also, rather than claiming that all is well with public servants in the state, especially teachers, the governor should endeavour to amend his way before bowing out of office by putting smiles on the faces of the teachers and the public workers at large.”
