TCN demolishes illegal structures in Kano

In a bid to safeguard power transmission, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) carried out an exercise between April 23 and 24 to demolish illegal structures erected within parts of its transmission right-of-way in Kano.

TCN’s General Manager, Public Affairs, noted in a statement that the Encroachment and Anti-Vandalism Committee undertook the exercise to protect the integrity of the transmission network.

According to her, the agency had previously issued warnings against participating in activities such as trading or construction within the designated Transmission Rights of Way before demolishing the illegal structures.

Mbah further noted that the structures risked the reliability of the transmission lines and the safety of individuals, hence the demolition.

“The demolition operation targeted unauthorised developments along critical power lines, including the Kano-Zaria 330kV line, Kano-Zaria 132kV and Kano-Kankia 132kV line, in the Panshekara and Reka communities.”

The specified right-of-way measurements, according to Mbah, are 25 metres on either side of 330 kV lines and 15 metres on both sides of 132 kV lines.

The TCN’s Public Affairs General Manager urged people to adhere to these specified measurements, as acting contrary to this directive endangers lives and poses risks to surrounding communities.

She assured Nigerians that the TCN will continue safeguarding transmission lines to ensure stable power transmission.

“The committee will continue to work not only in the Kano region of TCN, but also in other transmission regions, as part of measures to safeguard the transmission lines and integrity of our towers for a more stable and efficient bulk power transmission.”
