Teachers in Bauchi State yesterday staged a peaceful protest over the non-payment of their eight months salary.

The protesting teachers first stormed the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) office along Ran road in Bauchi in the morning with placards demanding for the payment of their salary.

Work at SUBEB was temporarily disrupted yesterday following the protests as officials attempted to calm the teachers

They later proceeded to the palace of the Emir of Bauchi, Dr. Rilwanu Suleiman Adamu to register their grievance.

The aggrieved teachers appealed to the traditional ruler to intervene in their situation.

The Emir while sympathising with the teachers commended them for being law abiding in registering their complaints.

The monarch then assured them he would appeal to the relevant authorities to pay them.

Speaking with newsmen, the leader of the protesting teachers, Mohammed Auwal, said they were employed in March 2015 and deployed to all the 20 local government areas to teach.

“But due to selfishness or carelessness of some people we have not been paid since October till date.

“We have passed through different stages of verification. We have been verified more than five times but nothing has been done about our salary.’’

Effort to get the reaction of the President of Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in the state, Comrade Danjuma Saleh was abortive as his mobile number was not available.

Reacting to the development, the Chairman of SUBEB, Professor Yakubu Ibrahim Yaro said he met with the representatives of the protesting teachers and expressed hope that the issue would soon be resolved assuring that those affected would soon receive their salary.

He assured that the state government high-powered committee recently set up to address the problem was working to address the teething problems resulting from the verification

It will be recalled that several state workers and pensioners have staged protests to the government house and the state assembly over delay in payment of salary and pension.

Faced with dwindling resources owing to drop in allocation from federation account, the state government initiated verification exercise to flush out ghost worker.
