Tears as mother, daughter burnt in Abeokuta tanker explosion

Tears flowed yesterday as a mother, her daughter and one other were reported burnt in a tanker explosion at a railway crossing, Lafenwa, Abeokuta, Ogun State.

 
Others sustained injuries in the accident, which occurred yesterday morning at a railway crossing in Lafenwa area of the state.
 
An eyewitness said the fire was ignited when an owner of a fuel-laden tanker, which overturned at a railway level crossing in Lafenwa, brought another tanker to transload the content.
   
During the transloading, it ignited a fire which destroyed several shops in the area.
 
The eyewitness said a mother and her daughter were among the victims, who got burnt to ashes.
 
Confirming the incident, spokesperson for Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), Mr. Babatunde Akinbiyi, said the tanker was engulfed in fire due to the uncooperative attitude of people around the axis, who were scooping fuel and doing other unwholesome acts after the tanker fell.
 
Akinbiyi explained that the tanker, due to an axle problem overturned around 4:45a.m, while making its way inbound Rounder from Oju-Irin, Lafenwa, spilling its content on the road.
 
He, however, advised the public to vacate the vicinity, adding that TRACE, police, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and Fire Service are all on the ground to put the situation under control.

MEANWHILE, three people were killed yesterday on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in an accident involving two vehicles.

Ogun Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC)said the accident occurred at Ogere, near Sapade in the state.

Confirming the accident, the Sector Commander, Mr. Ahmed Umar, said one person sustained injury in the incident.

Umar explained that five persons were involved in the accident between a Nissan car marked GH 597 LND and a Mack truck marked SMK 499 XU.

He said: “The survivors are receiving treatment at a hospital in Ogun State, while bodies of two deceased have been deposited at the morgue of the same hospital.

“Efforts are ongoing to extricate the third deceased from the wreckage.’’

He blamed the accident on route violation and excessive speeding and cautioned motorists against violating traffic rules and regulations.

Umar, who commiserated with the families of the victims, enjoined them to contact FRSC Ogbere Command for additional information about the crash.
