INEC To Immortalise Okonta

Tears flowed freely and emotions were high as the remains of Samuel Dumebi Okonta Dumebi, the corps member who was murdered by unknown gunmen during the recent re-run elections in Rivers State, were buried yesterday in his hometown, Illah in Delta State.

His remains were interred at his family compound around 3:00 pm after a burial service in his honor at the Christ Holy Family Catholic Church, Illah.

Okonta (with National Youth Service Corps- NYSC- number RV/15B/5539) was hit by his assailants while returning to his base after submitting the poll results at the Independent national Electoral Commission (INEC) Collation Centre in Ahoada West Council.

In his sermon, the Vicar of Issele-Uku Regular, Rev. Fr. Peter Mbuogwu, who led other officiating priests, frowned at the way politicians encouraged thug.

He urged them to fear God and to always remember that He alone gives power and to whom He wishes.

Mbuogwu also advised youth in the country to resist being used by selfish persons to commit atrocities and, instead to use their God-given talents for the good of society.

He prayed God to grant the late Okonta eternal rest and urged Nigerians to immortalise him and his likes by resolving to respect the sanctity of human life and embrace peaceful and credible approaches to electoral activities.
