Terrorism: Ekpa, Finnish authorities may request case re-evaluation

Simon-Ekpa

Fresh facts reveal that arrested Pro-Biafra separatist leader, Simon Ekpa, and Finnish authorities may request a re-evaluation of the terror case in two weeks if necessary.

Already, the Finnish court has set a trial date for Simon Ekpa in May 2025, as announced by Finnish authorities after he was arrested along with four others on suspicion of terrorism-related activities and is currently in custody at the Päijät-Häme District Court.

Senior Detective Superintendent Mikko Laaksonen of Finland’s National Bureau of Investigation confirmed the timeline for the trial, stating, “The date for bringing possible charges by the prosecution was set by the district court for May 2025.”

Ekpa, a Finnish citizen of Nigerian descent, faces serious allegations that include incitement to violence, terrorism financing, and public incitement to commit crimes with terrorist intent. Finnish police allege that he used social media to incite violence in Nigeria’s southeastern region, targeting both civilians and authorities.

His actions are reportedly linked to economic losses exceeding ₦4 trillion due to enforced sit-at-home orders and increasing insecurity in the area. The arrests were part of a broader investigation that required international cooperation.

While Finnish authorities have not provided further details about these cross-border efforts, Ekpa’s arrest has gained significant attention due to his influence on the ongoing unrest in Nigeria.
