Three female bombers blow up selves in IDPs camp

The military yesterday said that three Boko Haram female suicide bombers blew up themselves near Monguno Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp while the people were fetching water in the morning yesterday.

The detonated strapped Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) however killed two civilians.

Spokesman of Nigerian Army, Col. Sani Usman, who disclosed this in a statement issued to newsmen in Maiduguri, said the detonated strapped IEDs however killed two civilians.

He said that troops have condoned off the general area and imposed restriction of movement into Monguno to ensure safety of the area.

In a related development, troops of 8, 118 and 119 Task Force Battalions and Task Force Division of Nigerian Army have killed four Boko Haram terrorists and recovered 48 jerry cans of fuel and eight motorcycles in Kangarwa area of Borno State in the North-East sub-region of the country.

During the clearance military operations, the troops also recovered arms and ammunition, including two AK-47 rifles and Henagar hand grenades.

Col. Usman in a statement issued to newsmen in Maiduguri yesterday said: “The Boko Haram terrorists were suspected to be fleeing from the advancing troops of 119 Task Force Battalion presently mopping up the general area of Kangarwa in Kukawa Local Council of Borno State.

“During the operation, the troops killed four Boko Haram terrorists carrying logistic items. The troops recovered 48 jerry cans containing 1,440 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and Automative Gas Oil (AGO), 8 motorcycles, out of which two were destroyed.”

He said other arms recovered include 21 rounds of 7,62mm (special) ammunition, two AK-47 rifles, an unprimed improvised explosive device and assorted drugs.

He, however, noted that one of the military vehicles and communication equipment were also damaged by terrorists’ gunshots, while fleeing Kangarwa axis.

Meanwhile, Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno State has disclosed that N435 million was received as cash donations to “feed and maintain” over 500,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) resettled in various camps in the state.

Shettima, who spoke at the weekend in Maiduguri at the Government House during an interactive session with journalists on how international donor-agencies assist the state government to feed IDPs, said that the state government had never received any cash donation from international donors to feed the over 500,000 displaced persons in camps.

“I want to say that many Nigerians may be shocked to know that a total of N435 million is the overall amount received as cash donation by the state government from May 2011 to date,” said Shettima.
