The Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Philip Agbese, has said improved funding and the timely release of appropriated resources are critical to strengthening Nigeria’s fight against insurgency and other security threats.

Speaking with journalists in Abuja, Agbese commended the leadership of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, particularly the Chief of Defence Staff, Olufemi Oluyede, and the Chief of Army Staff, Waidi Shaibu, for what he described as a focused and results-driven approach to tackling insecurity.

Agbese said while troops have shown resilience in the face of evolving threats, operational success depends heavily on consistent financial support.

“Our military is doing an extraordinary job under very demanding conditions. However, military operations require consistent funding, timely releases, and access to modern equipment,” he said.

He noted that recent gains across various theatres of operation reflect a renewed strategic direction, including intensified offensives against insurgents and criminal networks.

The lawmaker pointed to what he described as improved coordination within the military hierarchy, alongside enhanced morale among troops.

According to him, the current leadership has strengthened intelligence-driven operations and inter-agency collaboration, key elements in modern warfare.

“What we are seeing today is a leadership that is not only committed but also strategic. There is better coordination and a clear determination to confront these threats head-on,” he said.

The Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Phillip Agbese, says improved funding and timely release of resources are critical to strengthening Nigeria’s fight against insurgency and insecurity.

Agbese warned that delays in releasing approved funds could undermine ongoing operations and create gaps that armed groups might exploit.

“Appropriations alone are not enough. What matters is the speed and consistency of releases. Delays can affect logistics and give criminal elements breathing space,” he said.

He urged relevant government institutions to treat defence funding as a priority, describing it as essential to national stability.

The Benue lawmaker also called on Nigerians to support security efforts through cooperation and information sharing, stressing that civilian engagement remains crucial.

He added that stronger collaboration between the military, other security agencies, state governments and local communities is necessary to address both the symptoms and root causes of insecurity.

Agbese expressed optimism that with sustained funding, institutional backing and coordinated leadership, Nigeria can make meaningful progress in restoring peace.

“This is a fight we can win. With the right support, leadership and national unity, we will see a turning point,” he said.
