Tinubu appoints Ogundipe as NUC chairman

Professor Oluwatoyin Temitayo Ogundipe

President Bola Tinubu has appointed a former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, as Chairman of the Governing Board of the National Universities Commission (NUC).

Ogundipe succeeds Emeritus Prof. Olufemi Aina, who resigned less than a year after his appointment.

President Tinubu named Aina chairman of the board in July 2025, and the board was inaugurated in November of the same year.

As NUC chairman, Ogundipe is expected to provide strategic oversight of Nigeria’s university regulatory system, with an emphasis on strengthening funding frameworks, enhancing global competitiveness, and promoting academic stability.

Making the appointment, Tinubu expressed confidence that he would provide visionary leadership and sustain the credibility of the nation’s university system.

A distinguished botanist and academic administrator, Ogundipe served as UNILAG Vice-Chancellor from 2017 to 2022. His areas of expertise include molecular plant taxonomy, biosystematics, ethnobotany, cytogenetics, forensic botany and ecological conservation.

The 66-year-old scholar holds a doctorate in Botany from the Obafemi Awolowo University and a Master of Business Administration degree from UNILAG.

He is currently the Pro-Chancellor of Redeemer’s University, Ede, Osun State, and is a fellow of several professional bodies, including the Nigerian Academy of Science, the Linnaean Society of London, and the Royal Society of Biology, London, among others.
