Tinubu convenes special FEC session to honour Buhari today

President Bola Tinubu will convene a special session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) tomorrow, Thursday, in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 82.

The commemorative session, scheduled to take place at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa in Abuja, will be dedicated to paying tribute to Buhari’s legacy as a military officer, civilian leader, and elder statesman who has shaped Nigeria’s political trajectory for over six decades.

Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, announced the event on Wednesday night via his official X handle.

“A special session of the Federal Executive Council in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari will be held on Thursday, 17 July, from 1 p.m.,” Onanuga stated. “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will lead the session of tributes for the departed leader.”

The late Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s military Head of State from 1983 to 1985 and later as democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023, died in a London hospital following a brief illness.

The special FEC session is expected to be attended by members of the Federal Cabinet, top government functionaries, and former aides of the late President. It will feature tributes and personal reflections on Buhari’s leadership, policies, and his enduring influence on national governance.

President Tinubu had earlier ordered that condolence registers be opened in all federal ministries, departments, and agencies, as well as at Nigerian embassies and missions abroad, as part of official mourning activities.

The Presidency has described the late leader as a man of integrity, simplicity, and selfless service, whose contributions to national development will remain etched in the country’s history.
