Tinubu has power to fire only one governor – ADC spokesperson

Spokesperson for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Bolaji Abdullahi, has claimed that President Bola Tinubu has the power to fire only one governor.

Abdullahi said this following the recent reinstatement of Siminilayi Fubara as the Governor of Rivers State, after being suspended for six months.

Reacting to Fubara’s reinstatement via a post on his official X account on Thursday, Abdullahi said the only governor that President Tinubu has the power to fire and hire is the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Yemi Cardoso.

The ADC spokesperson argued that the president does not have that power over a state governor, while criticising the manner of Fubara’s suspension and reinstatement.

“The cavalier manner in which President Tinubu suspended and subsequently reinstated the elected Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, is whimsically autocratic,” he said.

“President Tinubu must not be allowed to disguise political brinkmanship as statesmanship. The suspension of the Rivers Governor was self-serving, unconstitutional, and will define President Tinubu’s political legacy.”
