Tinubu presidency ‘most documented in Africa’, says civic group

A civic advocacy organisation, The Citizens Project, has described President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration as potentially the most extensively documented presidency in Africa, based on independent tracking by citizens and civil society groups.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Dr Sam Okey Nwosu, Chief Facilitator and Co-Convener of The Citizens Project, said the group has, since May 29, 2023, been closely monitoring the Tinubu administration’s policies, reforms, appointments and key decisions. According to him, the initiative is citizen-led, operating independently of the government and focused on promoting transparency and accountability.

Nwosu explained that the project has produced what it calls ‘The Reform Index™’ — a growing database of records that catalogue significant actions taken under the current administration. These include the removal of fuel subsidies, the ongoing currency reforms, regional development initiatives and major judicial appointments.

Unlike official government documentation, Nwosu said, The Reform Index™ is designed to reflect an unbiased record of policy actions, to make governance more transparent and traceable to the electorate.

“This isn’t about praise or criticism,” Nwosu stated. “It is about making governance visible and reminding everyone that democracy thrives when citizens are not just voting, but also watching.”

He noted that the project operates across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, with volunteers and partner organisations contributing to its data collection and validation process.

“As President Tinubu moves into the second half of his tenure, the long-term impact of his reforms remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: this presidency will be one of the most documented in African history,” Nwosu added.

He revealed that the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, and the Emir of Bichi, Alhaji Nasir Ado Bayero, serve as national patrons of The Citizens Project, lending traditional legitimacy and national reach to its activities.

Founded in 2022, The Citizens Project describes itself as a non-partisan civic platform dedicated to strengthening democracy through active citizen monitoring and documentation of governance processes.

According to the group, its mission is not to appraise government performance in subjective terms, but to ensure that actions taken by public officials remain in the public eye long after electoral cycles have ended.
