President Bola Tinubu has received the Report on the Ogoni Consultations from a committee led by Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, aimed at addressing environmental and social concerns in Ogoniland.
The presentation took place at the State House Council Chambers in Abuja, according to a post on X by Tinubu’s social media aide Dada Olusegun.
The committee, comprising Ogoni stakeholders including traditional rulers, clergy, and community leaders, was established to gather views on the long-standing challenges in the oil-rich Niger Delta region.
Ogoniland has faced extensive environmental damage from oil exploration dating back to the 1950s, resulting in the loss of farmland and polluted waterways.
A 2011 United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report detailed widespread pollution and recommended a clean-up.
The Dialogue Committee’s work followed Tinubu’s January 2025 meeting with Ogoni leaders, where he called for unity and directed the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, to coordinate consultations.
The issues raised include environmental restoration, possible resumption of oil activities under sustainable terms, and economic development, with an emphasis on community participation.
Tinubu’s administration has also restructured HYPREP’s management and appointed Ogoni representatives to positions within the project.
The report is expected to guide efforts to accelerate the cleanup and support development projects in the area.
