
President Bola Tinubu, yesterday, assented to two separate bills establishing the Federal University of Agriculture and Development Studies in Iragbiji, Osun State and Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences in Iyin-Ekiti, Ekiti State.
The President said that the specialised institutions would address the educational needs of the populace while driving research and innovation and contributing to the country’s overall economic growth and development.
He said that the institutions would serve as training grounds for developing agriculture, science and technology professionals and enhancing Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global economy.
Leader of the Senate, Opeyemi Bamidele, who spoke, yesterday, after the signing of the two legislations establishing the two universities at the State House, Abuja,commended the President for approving the establishment of the two federal universities with specific mandate to address knowledge deficit in environmental technology and promote innovative research in food security and agricultural production.
Meanwhile, Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, who spoke before the assent of the bills, had strongly recommended the establishment of the universities.
In a letter to the Presidency on February 19, 2025, the minister asked the President to approve the establishment of the two federal universities as passed by the National Assembly.
