Former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Uche Secondus, has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of presiding over the gradual liquidation of Nigeria’s democracy and economy.
Secondus stated this on Wednesday in Abuja at the ongoing public presentation of two new books authored by veteran journalist and political communicator, Ike Abonyi, titled The Bubbles of Nigeria’s Democracy: The Musings of a Nigerian Journalist and Wadata Wonders: Memoirs of a Partisan Journalist.
According to Secondus, Nigeria’s current democratic structure is dysfunctional, with political parties lacking ideological coherence and institutional continuity.
He further warned that Nigeria is on the verge and heading toward liquidation under President Tinubu’s leadership.
He said: “We are still far from getting to a point where we can say we have democracy. We don’t have democracy in our country. What we have is a platform for winning an election.
“Our country is gradually moving in the wrong direction to a place where you can say Nigeria is on the verge of liquidation, presided over by Bola Tinubu. Everyone in the communities, the political parties, is supposed to be a chain of command from the wards and from the units.”
Secondus lamented the absence of strong political institutions in Nigeria, contrasting the situation with South Africa’s African National Congress (ANC), which he described as an unshakable institution.
He noted that in Nigeria, politicians frequently switch parties without consequence, eroding democratic culture and stability.
Highlighting the importance of documentation and intellectual reflection, Secondus praised Abonyi for his contribution to national discourse through his books, which he said are a testament to experience and intellectual depth.
He also encouraged political actors and stakeholders to invest in building long-lasting party structures that can stand the test of time.
“Until we establish proper democratic political parties where people can stay 30, 40, 50 years, build and reconstruct, the country will not move forward,” he said.
