A University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) don, Prof. Ibrahim Umara, has said that policy reforms of President Bola Tinubu have prevented the country’s economy from collapsing with enhanced revenue generation to boost local and foreign investments, as well as employment for youths and women.
According to him, Tinubu was in 2023 confronted with challenges of insecurity, devalued naira and dwindling internally generated revenues (IGR).
Umara spoke in Maiduguri, Borno State, at the North East Sensitisation Programme (NESP) on the midterm achievements of the president.
He said the removal of fuel subsidies with the implementation of various economic reforms set the country towards a sustainable economic growth and development, which are estimated to rise by seven per cent in 2027.
Umara noted that it is evident that Tinubu’s administration has made significant strides in the various sectors of the economy.
“The Federal Ministry of Information (FMoI) is, however, not doing much in publicising the successes already recorded since the President took the mantle of leadership of the country in May 2023,” he noted.
The university teacher attributed the dormancy of the Federal Government’s media agencies to inadequate funding in sensitising the public on the “security and socio-economic” achievements of President Tinubu in only two years.
Highlighting the achievements of the Tinubu administration, Umara added: “The rising inflation rate has been reduced with increased local and foreign investments in the agriculture, industrial, technology, and innovation sectors of the economy.”
He noted that Nigeria recorded a trade surplus of over N18 billion along with Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth rate of 3.4 per cent in 2024.
“Even the country’s budget deficit was reduced from 50 per cent in 2023 to a remarkable rate of 23 per cent this year.
“The president’s infrastructural facilities are catalysts for coordinated national investments in railways, power generation and road networks.”
The Head of Centre, FMoI and NOA, Borno State, Bunu Abdulsalam, commended the Minister of Information, Alhaji Idris Mohammed, for organising an important engagement with stakeholders, including media practitioners, academia, civil society organisations (CSOs) and traditional rulers in charting the way forward for a better country.
Abdulsalam stated that the stakeholders’ sensitisation initiative was in line with the president’s eight-point agenda in ensuring transparency, public engagement, and citizens’ full participation in national development.
The Borno State Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Aminu Chamalwa, said that Tinubu has championed initiatives aimed at uplifting the most vulnerable in society by giving priority to the education, health, security, and social protection sectors.
The permanent secretary, therefore, urged citizens to embrace the spirit of patriotism with collective responsibility, stating: “Together we can build on the recorded achievements for our economic growth and development.”
