Though the concept of ‘metaverse’ has been around for years, its popularity soared after the rebranding of Facebook at the end of 2021. ‘Metaverse’ has been a buzzword in the tech industry throughout 2022. Many companies, including Microsoft and Nvidia, revealed their plans to develop metaverse environments for large-scale digital projects. However, 2022 did not turn out to be the breakout year for the metaverse.

Experts predict that the metaverse concept will add over $5 trillion to the global economy by 2030 and 2023 will be a defining year in this regard.

Metaverse in 2023

Marketing and advertising are the key enablers for the metaverse or web 3.0. Many global giants, from investment banks to media conglomerates, have started building their metaverse presence.

As consumers expect brands to interact with them in meaningful ways, companies want to capitalize on the latest technologies to make that happen. Over the next year, companies will be trying to position themselves at key virtual locations, either through developing their own platforms or using the existing virtual arenas. The metaverse will see a lot of developments in the coming years. The top metaverse trends for 2030 include:

The Corporate Metaverse

The metaverse is more than just a marketing tool. It will provide an integrated virtual environment where businesses can operate efficiently and as naturally as they do in the physical world. In 2023, we may also see the idea of metaverse merging with the concept of ‘digital twin’ – virtual representations of real-world systems, products, or operations.

Together, the metaverse and digital twin can profoundly change how online businesses operate. The former has tremendous power as a marketing tool and the latter provides a safe environment to test and prototype new ideas.

Web3 and Decentralization

The proponents of web 3.0 want a decentralized virtual world outside of the control of governments and global giants that want to censor people’s opinions. Freedom from censorship is one of the critical visions for the metaverse. This vision revolves around decentralized platforms like Decentraland and The Sandbox.

These platforms will be organized as autonomous, blockchain-governed organizations. Individuals will be able to buy ownership rights which will give them a say in how the organization is run. This will lead to the formation of digital democracies and user-owned communities.

Virtual & Augmented reality

The metaverse will be far more engaging than the digital worlds that exist today i.e. social media and the World Wide Web. Experiential and immersive technologies like augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed/extender reality (MR/XR) will power our interaction with the metaverse.

Using these technologies, the metaverse businesses will provide their customers with immersive, life-like experiences. Meta, for example, will primarily use virtual reality to power user interaction. In 2023, we can expect to see new versions of Meta’s Quest VR headsets and VR/AR/MR headsets from tech giants like Microsoft, Apple, and Google.

More Advanced Avatar Technology

To represent ourselves in the virtual world, we will need avatars just as we do in video games. An avatar is an electronic image representing a particular person on an internet forum or an entertainment website like an online casino. In the metaverse, you can opt for an avatar that looks just like you or choose something cartoonish or more fascinating.

Companies like Carv3D and Hour One can help you create photo-realistic humanoid avatars to represent yourself in the digital world. Carv3D’s personal-specific facial animation system can give your avatar over 150 humanistic facial expressions. Ready Player Me and Zepeto are also at the forefront of avatar synthesis for the metaverse. They allow you to create avatars that can be used in several different virtual environments.
