At least two people were shot dead in Kenya on Monday, police said, as opposition supporters protested a court ruling that upheld the election of President Uhuru Kenyatta.

A young man was shot dead in Kibera, Nairobi, while another man was killed in Migori in western Kenya.

Both fatalities occurred during confrontations between police and supporters of opposition leader Raila Odinga who has disputed the result of the presidential election.

“We have one fatality of a person who was shot when these youths were running around and causing mayhem. They were even stoning motorists and anti-riot police officers,” said a police officer at the scene in Kibera where an AFP journalist saw the body.

The other death was of a paramedic shot dead while attending to the injured during a protest in Migori.

“He was among other medics in an ambulance but he was left behind as the ambulance rushed victims to hospital. That is when he was hit by a bullet,” said a police officer.

Migori county police chief Joseph Nthenge confirmed the killing and said an investigation was underway into the circumstances.
