Two suicide bombers blow themselves up in Maiduguri mosque

Two suspected Boko Haram suicide bombers blew themselves up at Sulemanti in Maiduguri metropolis of Borno State in the early hours of yesterday.

Two suspected Boko Haram suicide bombers blew themselves up at Sulemanti in Maiduguri metropolis of Borno State in the early hours of yesterday.

According to Borno State Police Command, the Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), the suspects had strapped on their bodies but were detonated, killed the two suspects during midnight Ramadan prayers.

Spokesman of Borno Police Command, Isuku Victor, confirmed the incident yesterday in Maiduguri, stating that: “A team of the Police Explosives Ordinance Department (EOD) has been deployed to the scene this morning near Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) depot.”

A civilian Joint Task Force member, Bukar Fantami also told The Guardian that the suicide bombers were intercepted near a mosque premises and under a tree, before they blew themselves up.

“The people in the mosque took to their heels, while we challenged the explosives strapped suspects of their mission to the mosque, before
these devices exploded near the mosque and under this tree,” said Fantami.

He further disclosed: “It was God that saved us here; we would have been killed in the suicide bombings. Some of our members were injured by the shrapnel including a woman with a leg injury. She was taken to a nearby clinic for treatment this morning.”

On how terrorist suspects sneaked into Maiduguri, Fantami said:

“The area of Sulemanti ward and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) quarters, south of the metropolis, are porous with no military posts and patrols.”
Meanwhile, the mosque and other public places in the metropolis have come under intense security watch by soldiers and policemen to prevent any further attacks.
