Two suspected cult members set ablaze in Jos
The Plateau State Police Command has reported a case of jungle justice, or mob action, which occurred in Jenta Adamu, Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State, resulting in the deaths of two individuals.
According to the report, the incident was triggered by a distress call from a concerned citizen of Jenta Adamu, who informed authorities that around 9:20 a.m., a group of unidentified cult members had invaded the community and were attempting to rob law-abiding citizens of their belongings.
In response to the call, the Plateau State Commissioner of Police reportedly ordered the Divisional Police Officer of “A” Division Jos to deploy police officers and detectives to the scene for an investigation. Upon arrival, the team discovered that an angry mob had already taken matters into their own hands, chased the suspected invaders, and set them ablaze.
In a statement, the Police, in collaboration with the leadership of Jos North Local Government Area, evacuated the charred bodies from the scene and deposited them at the hospital morgue. During the investigation, two locally fabricated pistols, believed to belong to the unidentified cult members, were recovered from the scene.
The Plateau State Commissioner of Police, CP Emmanuel Olugbemiga Adesina, condemned the actions of the armed robbers and cultists in the state and strongly denounced the execution of jungle justice.
The CP said that, as in any civilized society, when suspects are apprehended by citizens, they should be handed over to the relevant security agencies to ensure justice is served according to the provisions of the Plateau State Penal Code.
CP Adesina warned that any person or group involved in executing jungle justice would face severe consequences in accordance with the law.
He also urged the public to remain calm, assuring that the Command has implemented effective measures to ensure the safety and security of all residents in the state.
