ENUGU State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, has charged the committee on Nsukka urban renewal, inaugurated at the weekend, to produce a blue print for the development of the area into a modern city.

Also at the weekend, the governor declared that his administration would liaise with major stakeholders in the state to foster sustainable development while seeking for the equality of all geopolitical zones through the creation of a new state in the South East zone.

Addressing the stakeholders under the umbrella of Enugu State Development Association (ESDA), led by Chief Enechi Onyia (SAN), Ugwuanyi commended the efforts of the association since its formation, which led to the creation of Enugu State in 1991.

Ugwuanyi charged the 11-man committee to approach their duties “with missionary zeal and every sense of urgency, diligence and selflessness,” by sticking to every bit of the five-point terms of reference and the guidelines which includes identifying the factors responsible for the slow pace of development in Nsukka and to develop a master plan or modify the existing one if necessary for the university town.

Other points include identifying structures/buildings erected without due approval or which constitute obstruction to the urban renewal plan. They are also required to identify new satellite areas to be developed as part of Nsukka Urban and to make recommendations to the government in respect of actions to be taken to achieve the objectives of urban renewal drive.

The governor restated his desire to develop and equip new urban areas and noted that, “it was in line with this that I declare that we must equip and modernize Nsukka – the second largest urban area in Enugu and a university town founded over half a century ago to compete with its contemporaries elsewhere in attracting technology and knowledge-based businesses as well as other industrial support ventures.”
