Eminent scientist and distinguished academic, Prof. Idowu Olayinka, was yesterday named the new Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan (UI).

Olayinka, a professor of Geology, takes over from Prof. Isaac Adewole whose tenure will end on November 30.

Olayinka, 57, who emerged from the six candidates earlier shortlisted for the position, is the first VC of the institution to emerge from the Faculty of Science since its establishment in 1948.

Unveiling the new helmsman at the Senate Chambers of the institution, the Pro-Chancellor, Dr. Umar Mustapha, said the choice of Olayinka was unanimous after three candidates were recommended by the selection committee.

Mustapha, who explained that of the six candidates vying for the position, three were recommended after screening and interview where Olayinka was unanimously selected, said: “The candidates were all rated based on their performance and the process was open and credible.”

In his remark, Prof. Adewole lauded the selection committee for the smooth exercise, saying this is commendable and should be applauded.
