The British High Commission in Abuja has introduced a change to the United Kingdom’s visa system affecting Nigerians seeking study and work permits.
Beginning 15 July 2025, applicants in these categories will receive digital eVisas instead of physical stickers in their passports. The shift is part of the UK government’s plan to implement a fully digital immigration framework.
According to the announcement, the new procedure applies to applications filed from 15 July onward. Those submitted before that date will continue under the current system, which requires applicants to leave their passports at a Visa Application Centre for physical visa issuance. Visit visa applicants will also continue receiving physical vignettes for now.
“From 15 July 2025, most individuals applying to enter the UK on study or work-related visas will no longer receive a physical visa sticker (vignette) in their passport.
“Instead, successful applicants will be issued an eVisa, a secure, online record of their immigration status. This change marks a major step in the UK Government’s transition to a modern, digital immigration system.
“This change applies only to study or work visa applications submitted on or after 15 July 2025. Applicants who apply before 15 July will continue with the current process, including leaving their passport at the Visa Application Centre and receiving a vignette. Visit visa applications will continue to receive the visa vignette sticker for the time being.”
Gill Obe, Chargé d’Affaires at the Commission, said the policy aims to streamline the travel process for Nigerian students and professionals. She stated that most study and work visa applicants will now receive digital authorisation rather than physical stickers.
However, she added that dependants such as spouses and children of principal applicants, along with those applying for visitor visas, would continue with the existing vignette system temporarily.
The Commission explained that digital visas had already replaced Biometric Residence Permits for individuals granted entry for more than six months. UKVI account holders may use a digital verification service to prove their immigration status to institutions such as employers and landlords.
Applicants must apply through the UK government’s official website, submit biometric data in person, and follow up with account setup to access their eVisa after receiving confirmation of approval.
