Umahi pays tribute to ‘political heavyweight’ Iwuanyanwu
David Umahi, the Minister of Works, has paid tribute to the late Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, former President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, recognizing him as a respected national figure and a significant political heavyweight in Nigeria.
Speaking at a memorial event in Abuja on Saturday, Umahi praised Iwuanyanwu’s exemplary professional track record and his advocacy for national development and ethical reform. He expressed deep sorrow over the loss of his leader, whom he described as a father figure and a colleague, stating, “Today, with a deep sense of loss and yet with a gratifying heart for the purposeful life and times of my leader, father, and professional colleague, Chief Engr. Emmanuel Chuwuemeka Iwuanyanwu, CFR, who was called to eternal glory on July 25, 2024, at the age of 82.”
Umahi fondly recalled the cherished memories of Iwuanyanwu, stating, “He was a household name in Igbo land and Nigeria at large, canvassing unequivocally for equity, equality, and national development.”
He stressed Iwuanyanwu’s desire for a progressive Nigeria characterized by peace, prosperity, and justice.
Describing Iwuanyanwu as a “successful captain of industry,” Umahi noted his significant contributions across various sectors, including media, entertainment, shipping, insurance, and hospitality. He noted that Iwuanyanwu’s legacy continues through his media outfit, Champion Newspaper Ltd, now led by his daughter, Dr. Nwadiuto Iheakanwa.
Umahi pointed out Iwuanyanwu’s influential role in national reconciliation efforts and political harmonization during critical elections in Nigeria’s 3rd and 4th Republics, stating, “His influence, sagacity, contacts, and connections cannot be written off in the political landscape of Nigeria. He was a great voice for national consensus.”
He reflected on Iwuanyanwu’s dedication to his people, saying, “When a leadership gap was created after the death of the then President-General of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Amb. Obiozor, he offered to fill the gap and recorded tremendous achievements within a short time.”
Umahi concluded by urging the family and the people of the South East to keep Iwuanyanwu’s ideals alive and reaffirmed the need for Nigeria to celebrate the late chief’s legacy, stating, “May his soul rest in perfect peace, Amen.”
