Kano State Government, yesterday, arraigned a Chinese national, Geng Quangrong for alleged murder of 24-year-old Ummukulsum Sani Buhari in the state.

Quangrong was arraigned on a one-count charge of culpable homicide before Justice Sanusi Ado Ma’aji of Kano High Court.

Lead prosecuting counsel and Attorney General of the state, M A. Lawan, said the offence contravenes section 221, paragraph B of penal code laws of Kano State as amended and punishable with death sentence.

But, Quangrong through his designated interpreter, Guo Cunru, denied the content of the charge and pleaded not guilty.

Sequel to his not guilty plea, the prosecuting counsel asked the court to adjourned till further date to enable the prosecution present five witnesses to substantiate the charge.

Justice Sanusi, subsequently, adjourned to November16, 17 and 18 , 2022 for definite hearing on the murder charge.

Quangrong was accused of stabbing Ummukulsum to death with a knife on November 16, 2022, at her Jambulo quarters in Kabuga area of the state.

He was arrested and detained by the police.  His arraignment was stalled for three weeks, after the defence lawyer, Mohammad Danazimi claimed his client should be granted permission to engage a professional interpreter to translate the language of the court to his mother tongue.

The prosecution did not object to the demand but informed the court that an application had been sent to the Chinese embassy in Nigeria, requesting for the same.
