The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Offiong Offiong, has declared a sweeping crackdown on admission irregularities, certificate racketeering and other entrenched malpractices in the institution, warning that perpetrators will be exposed and prosecuted.
Speaking at a press briefing today at the Senate Chambers to herald the university’s 38th convocation, Offiong said the administration has already begun disciplinary action against officials linked to over-admission, insisting that the era of unchecked abuses is over.
“We have taken a firm position, no more over-admissions. The officer under whose watch this persisted is currently facing disciplinary action,” he said.
The Vice-Chancellor also revealed that the university is closing in on individuals involved in forging certificates and signatures of past principal officers, describing them as “enemies” of the institution.
“We are tracking those behind the printing of fake certificates in business centres. Once apprehended, we will not hesitate to expose them,” he added.
He said that, despite the reform push, the institution is set to graduate no fewer than 10,820 students during its 38th convocation ceremony, to be held between April 2 and 12, 2026.
Beyond the numbers, Offiong said the convocation marks a defining moment for his administration, being the first under his leadership since assuming office in December 2025.
He reiterated that his vision for the institution is anchored on excellence, innovation and integrity, with a strong emphasis on restoring public confidence in its systems.
