The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has demanded comprehensive implementation of the recently passed and enacted Child Protection Law in Kano.

The Act derived from the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), of which Nigeria is a signatory, originally enacted into the nation’s legal frameworks by the National Assembly in 2003.

Kano State government under the administration of former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje signed the act into law, joining other states of the federation where children’s rights are being prioritized.

In a statement by UNICEF Field Officer, Kano, Mr. Rahama R.M. Farah, the international agency applauded the courage of the immediate past administration for bringing the child protection law into reality.

According to UNICEF’s boss, “Kano State Child Protection Law is a remarkable achievement that benefits the children and people of Kano, having provided for the establishment of a legal framework to ensure the protection of children’s rights within the state.

“Now that the law has been established, it is crucial to allocate the necessary resources and establish mechanisms for its effective implementation. We urge the new administration in Kano State to take this vital step and provide adequate resources to ensure the comprehensive enforcement of the law”, Mr. Farah added.

Prior to the passage of the bill, UNICEF in collaboration with relevant stakeholders and the media conducted extensive consultations with key stakeholders, including faith-based and community leaders, to actualize the Act. The efforts which finally came to limelight seek to ensure the law reflects the values and aspirations of the people of Kano.
