UNTH performs heart surgeries on three children

Three children with various congenital heart diseases from the Kanu Nwankwo Heart Foundation are among the 13 patients currently receiving medical attention at the fifth round of the Open Heart Surgery programme of the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Enugu.

Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Christopher C Amah, who disclosed this yesterday, said that the programme is being carried out in conjunction with a nongovernmental organisation, Save A Heart Foundation, based in the United Kingdom for pediatrics cases.

He stated that, although the hospital received request for 10 cases of children with various heart problems from the foundation, it considered only three with complex cases for the programme, while the others had been moved to August when another round of the programme shall take place.

Amah explained that the Kanu Nwankwo Heart Foundation’s interest in the open heart surgeries conducted by the hospital arose when the international footballer and sports celebrity visited the UNTH permanent site at Ituku Ozalla, Enugu in December last year and was taken round the facilities at the centre.
