In the effort to develop girls child education United States National Committee in collaboration with United Nation Children Funds to spend about 72 million naira to the 300 Female teachers under the Female Teachers Trainee Scholarship Scheme in Gombe state.

The UNICEF Education Specialist D-field office Bauchi, Mairama Dikwa who repenting by Naomi Maiguwa stated this during the FTTSS committee meeting at Education Resource Centre in Gombe on Thursday.
She said that gender and equity issues in teacher training recruitment and distribution constitute one significant factor that continues to threaten the attainment of the goal of MDGs, EFA and UBE in Nigeria.

Dikwa said that shortage of female teachers in the rural schools has a negative impact on female pupils enrolment retention and completion, adding that according to the NEDS 2010 there is a considerable gender imbalance in the current teachers workforce the proportion of female teachers in Northern states ranges between 23 and 37 percent in the northern states.

“This disparity can be seen in dearth of qualified female teachers in the rural areas, the few available ones are concentrated in urban areas low quality of teachers there are cases in Kwara and Kaduna states where teachers were unable to pass primary four level examinations”, she added.

While speaking during the meeting the Desk office of UNICEF in State Universal Basic Education Board, Hajiya Aishatu Sambo said that the sum of 80,000 has been earmarked per student for the season to cover all expenses in their course.
