The Abandoned road

Residents of Udo Otung Uboh lane in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital have expressed displeasure over the bad state of the street whose road has remained abandoned and neglected for over 40 years.

According to the residents, who described the street as the worst in Uyo, the less than 1km road connecting two prominent streets, Kelvin and Udo Otung Uboh, has not witnessed any vehicular traffic for over 20 years.

Residents, who spoke to The Guardian when newsmen went on inspection yesterday, explained that, the road had been eaten up by gully erosion by more than five metres, while small trees grow in the middle amidst tall shrubs with nasty smelling stagnant pool of water, dotting every inch of the street.

One of them, Michael Essien, said, not only has no vehicle driven on the street for over 20 years, dangerous reptiles have taken over making journey on foot risky, especially during the rainy season.

He said: “This road has been like this even before Akwa Ibom State was created. It is bad to the extent that no administration has ever come to help the community in the construction.

“Over 20 years now, no vehicle has entered this road. The community through collective effort always ensured it is walkable.
“During the rainy season, the whole area, including houses and shops are always flooded, thereby leaving some houses and shops unoccupied and useless.

“Therefore, we beg the government to please come and rescue us in this situation so as to bring development to the area.

“There was a time, the state Ministry of Works came to inspect the road and since then we have not heard the outcome of their inspection.

“We are appealing to government and its agencies to come to our aid.”

Another resident, Udeme Ikpat, said: “The road has been like this even before Obasanjo’s regime, when we had Obong Victor Attah as the governor of Akwa Ibom State.”
