Valentine’s Day records highest traffic for ride-hailing sector

Valentine’s Day has become the busiest day for ride-hailing in Nigeria in 2026, with Bolt recording the highest number of ride requests and completed trips so far this year.

The spike underscores how social occasions are increasingly shaping urban mobility.
Internal company data shows a sharp nationwide surge in demand on February 14, led by major cities such as Lagos and Abuja.

Activity intensified from late afternoon into the evening as users travelled to dinner reservations, social gatherings and entertainment venues.

A statement by the Public Relations Manager, Bolt Nigeria, Femi Adeyemo, said trips to restaurants and leisure spots accounted for a significant share of destinations, with short intra-city journeys dominating demand.

The pattern points to ride-hailing becoming embedded in how Nigerians plan celebrations, particularly for time-sensitive outings.

Bolt noted that many riders chose not to drive, citing parking constraints, traffic congestion and late-night safety as concerns.
Instead, on-demand rides were used as a reliable tool to ensure punctual arrivals for scheduled plans.

For drivers, the spike translated into higher utilisation, more back-to-back trips and longer online hours, especially between early evening and late night, as they capitalised on peak demand.

Overall, the data point to a broader behavioural shift in which culturally significant days increasingly influence transportation demand.

Beyond traditional festive seasons, single-day social events like Valentine’s Day are now generating mobility volumes comparable to major holidays, highlighting how ride-hailing platforms are evolving from convenience services into a core component of urban lifestyle planning.
