Security men at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) have expressed joy over news of an end to the eight-month-old industrial action embarked by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The security men, who were at their respective duty posts, when The Guardian visited, said despite being paid one month out of seven months being owed, they are glad that the impasse is gradually coming to an end.
A security man said the situation has been traumatic as they were paid only a month’s salary in September since the strike action began.
According to him, they normally rely on events in the school for survival. He said: “We have no option than to resume here daily despite being paid owed for months since the strike commenced.
“We hope everything is resolved and things can come back to normal. The cleaners just resumed two weeks ago, they are also complaining but what can we do?”
A food vendor told The Guardian that he’s happy about the news of imminent resumption. “Market has been dull and we had to adjust to the situation since the strike started. We don’t want to sit at home. We are happy that the strike will soon be over.”
Despite the strike, the environment of the university looks neat and maintained by the maintenance. A worker said the institution is kept clean in readiness for resumption.
“You can check around, everyone is working and the environment is clean,” the worker said.
