We are yet to take decision on Sanusi’s reinstatement, says Kano governor, Yusuf

Kano State Governor-elect, Abba Kabiru Yusuf,

The planned reinstatement of the dethroned Muhammadu Sanusi, has continued to generate anxiety in the ancient city, following the inauguration of the state’s House of Assembly.

The Guardian reliably learnt that the newly-constituted legislature would commence legislative process on the state’s Emirate Council Amendment Law 2019.

The move, according to the source, would eventually prepare the ground for revocation of balkanisation of the Emirate Council and subsequent reinstatement of Sanusi.

“The Assembly would reconvene on June 19, 2023 when the process to review the Kano Emirate Council Amendment Law 2019 will begin. The bill, being sponsored by Kano State Government, intends to scrap the four additional emirates and ensure smooth reinstatement of Sanusi as Kano Emir,” the source stated.

But in a swift reaction, the state government has insisted that no decision on review of the Emirate Council Law and possible reinstatement of the dethroned emir has been taken yet.

Although the spokesperson of the governor, Sanusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa, did not debunk the revelation, he, however, insisted the Assembly would only deliberate on governor’s request for special advisers.

“The engagement between the Executive and Legislative arms of government in Kano will be open and transparent to allow the good people of Kano have access to information on major policies and decisions of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP)-led administration.

“His Excellency has submitted a request to appoint 20 special advisers, which was graciously approved by the state’s Assembly during its maiden sitting today. It is expected that the list of commissioner-nominees would be sent to the Assembly next week for confirmation,” Dawakin-Tofa noted.

It would be recalled that prior to May 29 inauguration, the presidential candidate of the NNPP and Spiritual Leader of Kwankwasiyya Movement, Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has declared that the new government would review the dethronement of Sanusi.

Former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje dethroned the former Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on March 2020 because of unresolved differences between the two prominent figures. Sanusi was accused of insubordination and failure to attend the new emirate council meeting.

Before he was dethroned and banished to Loko Village in Nasarawa State, Ganduje balkanised the Kano Emirate Council into five emirates, a deliberate attempt to weaken Sanusi’s power.
