Why APGA guber candidate inaugurated campaign council despite court declaration

Prof. Gregory Ibe
Chairman of Abia State All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Rev. Augustine Ehiemere, has stated that inaugurating the party’s state Governorship Campaign Council by its candidate, Prof. Gregory Ibe, is not a disregard to the law or court’s judgement.

An Abuja Federal High Court, presided over by Justice Binta Nyako, had, before last week’s inauguration of Ibe’s Campaign Council, headed by Dr. Longman Nwachuku, annulled the state’s APGA governorship primary, from which Ibe emerged the party’s candidate, as not in compliance with set out rules.

Responding to questions, yesterday, from journalists on why he disregarded the said court judgement, and inaugurated his campaign council, Ehiemere said that APGA and its governorship candidate are law abiding, and cannot disobey the law and/or verdicts of the court.

He said: “We have already filed a stay of execution suit, and appealed against that travesty of justice, which cannot stand the test of time at the higher court. Our legal team is on top of the game, and we are optimistic that we shall triumph in the end. We know the intent of those behind the judgment.”

Ibe had told his supporters, who trooped to his campaign secretariat, to remain calm, and be optimistic that the higher court would reverse the lower court’s judgement, and restore him as the party’s candidate on the basis that he emerged from a legally, transparent and duly organised party primary.

APGA’s National Chairman, Dr. Victor Oye, who inaugurated the campaign council, described Ibe as a born leader, and congratulated party members for electing him the governorship candidate.

He added that Ibe has shown capacity in his private life, and other assignments. Hence, “if voted into power, Abia will regain its pride of place.”
