The council chairman of Lau local government in Taraba State, Nigeria Silama Jatau, has denied allegations that he intentionally obstructed the planned turbaning ceremony in the Sanwi Chiefdom, describing the accusations as baseless and politically motivated.
The rebuttal, contained in a statement from his office on Tuesday, was in response to claims by the Yandang Youth Development Congress (YYDC), which accused the chairman of acting unilaterally and maliciously to frustrate the traditional event.
Jatau clarified that the postponement of the ceremony was in line with an official directive from the Taraba State Bureau for Local Government, Traditional and Chieftaincy Affairs.
The directive, communicated through a circular dated February 19, 2025,was observed to have placed a temporary suspension on the installation of all District and Village Heads pending the outcome of ongoing administrative reviews and peacebuilding efforts across the state.
“The Chairman merely conveyed the directive as required by his office. He does not have the constitutional powers to override instructions from the state government,” the statement noted.
Responding to criticisms over his acceptance of the Danmadamin Lau traditional title, Jatau’s office explained that the title was conferred before the February 19 directive and holds no administrative authority.
It emphasized that the situation is entirely different from the Sanwi Chiefdom ceremony, which falls under suspended traditional appointments.
The chairman also dismissed claims of ethnic bias or marginalization of the Yandang people, insisting that his administration has ensured inclusive representation of all ethnic groups within the council.
On allegations that he blocked the establishment of a police outpost in Didango Rhobi, the statement maintained that Jatau has consistently supported security efforts and worked closely with relevant agencies to maintain peace and order in the area.
Calling for calm and responsible engagement, Jatau urged the YYDC and other stakeholders to avoid politicizing administrative decisions or inflaming ethnic sentiments.
He reaffirmed his respect for the Sanwi Chiefdom, its traditional ruler, Pastor Dr. Haniel Hinlewheni Banti, and the entire Yandang community.
“The postponement of the turbaning ceremony, though unfortunate, was carried out in compliance with a state directive and in the interest of peace and due process,” the statement concluded.
