A group of Widows, under the umbrella of Christian Widows Widowers Empowered Initiative (CWWE) has appealed for support and sponsorship from government and well-meaning individuals for the training of widows to be self-reliant, in order to enhance their standard of living.

The appeal was made by the founder, Beatrice Omowumi Yesufu during the 2019 Widows Prayer Summit, held in Ajao Estate, Lagos, who said timely sponsorship and support would assist the group for prompt take-off of their training school located in Amuwo Odofin, where different vocations can be learnt.

Yesufu, who disclosed that the initiative was formed in 2017 on Facebook, with over 1,000 members, said: “As a widow, I discovered that I was lonely. I was looking for whom to speak with as friend and I discovered that the only people I could speak with to derive joy were my fellow widows. That was what brought about the initiative.

“All the people present here met on the platform and God instructed that we organise a yearly prayer programme for widows, where they can come together, pray together and depend on God in whatever they do.

“We do other programmes like Empowerment for widows. We help ourselves to also do mental health programmes. This is a prayer summit, a yearly programme that started last year. We have doctors and nurses among us and others who God had blessed. It is an inspiration from God, and I believe it is going to be a blessing to people around the world.”

She advised widows across the country to make up their minds to serve God, noting that the major challenge facing them is loneliness, which could lead to depression and suicide.

“You’ll discover that a lot of widows are having high blood pressure and other health related challenges, but when we come together, we see ourselves as one, we’ll cry together, laugh together, do a lot of things together and visit ourselves.”
