Policemen in Orji, Owerri North Local Council of Imo State yesterday arrested a woman who attempted to abduct a primary one pupil of Orji Primary School, Orji.

According to an eyewitness, the suspect had gained entry into the school after the pupils had settled in their classrooms, when she went into the primary one classroom and picked a pupil to a corner. She changed his uniform and was going out of the school premises with him on the pretense that she was taking him to a hospital.

In the process, one of the teachers accosted her, inquiring to know if the child was hers, which she affirmed. The teacher suspected otherwise and went to enquire from the primary one teacher, who denied knowledge of the suspect being the child’s mother.

The head teacher was alerted, who in turn called to inform the child’s mother. By this time, an irate crowd had gathered to deal with the suspect.

The mob spotted a vehicle parked in front of the school gate waiting for the suspect to come out with the child, but on realizing that the plan had been aborted, the driver sped off leaving the suspect behind. She confessed that she came to abduct the child. She was later handed over to the police for further interrogation.

A teacher told The Guardian: “We had earlier received a prophecy from a church about an impending kidnap in the school. Since then we have been in serious prayers. This is the result today and we thank God it was botched.”

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ikeokwu Orlando, could not be reached as at the time of filing this report, but police sources confirmed the story.
