France hits by another tragedy as five die in train accident
France, already reeling from the coordinated ISIS terror attacks, has been hit by another disaster as a TGV train derailed near French city of Strasbourg, with seven people killed and seven injured, local media report.A total of 49 technicians were in the train, which was performing tests on the new track at high speed to be commissioned in spring 2016, a source said.
The number of injured was not specified. According to the SNCF, the train would have “derailed due to excessive speed,” said Dominique-Jane Nicolas, Chief of Staff of the prefect of Alsace.
The precise reason for the derailment was not confirmed by mid-afternoon of Saturday. On site, part of the train was visible under a bridge in a wide channel of forty metres.
A team of divers from the gendarmerie, helicopters civil security, and dozens of emergency vehicles were dispatched to the scene of the accident.
The Secretary of State for Transport Alain Vidal, and minister Segolene Royal announced that they would go to the site.
