A-43-year-old teacher, Tofunmi Ogooluwamide, who allegedly defrauded a woman of N175,000 under the pretence of marrying her, on Tuesday appeared before an Abule Egba Magistrates’ Court.

The accused, who lives at 19, Sanusi St., Alakuko, a suburb of Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of obtaining by false pretence and stealing.

The prosecutor, Insp. Racheal Williams, told the court that the offence was committed sometimes in April 2015 at 23, Adenuga St., Ahmadiyya, a suburb of Lagos.

According to the prosecution, the accused proposed to one Miss Olabisi Oni and fraudulently collected N175,000 from her under the pretence of adding money to it to get a bus for transportation.

“He lied to the complainant that he was a divorcee, he gave her a wrong address and promised to marry her.

“He collected the money under the pretence of buying a bus for transportation to enable them to have a regular income after marriage,” she said.

Williams said that the accused absconded and all efforts to see him proved abortive until he was found somewhere in Meiran, Lagos.

The offence, according to the prosecutor, contravened sections 285 and 312 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.

The Magistrate, Mrs Adenike Shonubi, granted the accused a bail of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

She adjourned the case to Sept. 11 for trial.
