U.S. President Donald Trump has come under intense criticism after sharing an AI-generated image portraying himself in a Christ-like form on social media—an action that has sparked outrage across political and religious circles.
The controversial post, shared on Truth Social on Sunday night, depicted Trump dressed in a white robe with a red sash, holding a glowing orb in one hand while extending the other in a gesture resembling healing. The image closely resembled an earlier version circulated by conservative commentator Nick Adams.
The timing of the post—coinciding with Orthodox Easter, a sacred celebration in the Christian calendar—further amplified reactions from both supporters and critics. The image was removed from Trump’s account by Monday morning, although no official apology or explanation had been issued as of press time.
The backlash was notable within Trump’s conservative base, with several prominent figures publicly condemning the post.
Political activist Riley Gaines questioned the intent behind the image, warning against what she described as a lack of humility and cautioning that religious imagery should not be trivialised.
Media personality Cam Higby described the post as inappropriate, arguing that such content from a president undermines respect for religious beliefs.
Author and podcaster Michael Knowles urged restraint, noting that regardless of intent, the post could carry both spiritual and political consequences.
Republican lawmaker Don Bacon criticised the move as “divisive and immature,” warning that it risks alienating sections of the party. Similarly, former White House press secretary Ari Fleischer described the image as “offensive” and “embarrassing.”
Even staunch allies expressed disapproval. Former congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene criticised the post, linking it to broader concerns about Trump’s recent rhetoric and actions.
Christian commentator Allie Beth Stuckey argued that the image reflects a troubling trend of elevating political figures to near-religious status.
Podcaster Erick Erickson added that the incident could signal a shift among Christian conservatives who have long supported Trump but are now beginning to question his actions.
The controversy also comes amid renewed tensions between Trump and the Vatican, following remarks by Pope Leo XIV, who recently called for peace and reconciliation in global conflicts.
Trump had earlier criticised the pope’s stance on U.S. foreign policy, particularly regarding Iran. In response, the pontiff emphasised dialogue and urged world leaders to prioritise unity and conflict resolution.
The image originated from an earlier post by commentator Nick Adams, who portrayed Trump as a figure “healing” America.
Trump’s decision to reshare a modified version has reignited debate over political messaging, religious sensitivity, and the boundaries of satire in leadership.
